Renewing Your Student’s Scholarship

Renewing Your Student’s Scholarship
Beginning in late January, students who used scholarship funding the previous fall semester will receive an offer to renew their scholarship. Families have until April 15 to respond to their renewal award offer. Be sure to check your notifications in MyPortal weekly and respond to required tasks by the deadline.
If your student will receive scholarship funding for the spring semester only, then you will receive an offer to renew your student’s scholarship later in the semester.
Renewal vs New Student: What’s the difference?
In both the Opportunity Scholarship & ESA+ Scholarship Programs, there is a difference between renewal and new applicants.
- Scholarships are offered per student based on eligibility requirements, not per household.
- Under the Opportunity & ESA+ Scholarship law(s), award offers are made to all eligible renewal students before offers are made to eligible new student applicants.
- Review each program’s eligibility requirements.
- Each year, to remain eligible for the scholarship funding, parents of renewal students must take action.

Who is considered a renewal?
A student who used scholarship funding in the previous school year would be eligible to renew for the following school year.
Student A used scholarship funding during the 2023-2024 school year. Student A is eligible as a renewal for the 2024-2025 school year.
Student A used scholarship funding during the 2022-2023 school year. Student A did not use funding during the 2023-2024 school year. Therefore, Student A is now considered a new student for 2024-2025, not a renewal.
Who is considered a new student?
A student who has not used scholarship funding in the previous school year would be considered a new student applicant.
Note: If a year or more has passed since last using scholarship funding, your student is now considered a new student applicant.
